Magazines

Let's start talking about magazines.

Our final project is to create a magazine cover and two spreads for that magazine. This is all of entirely your creation and layout. Pick a subject that you thoroughly enjoy and make a magazine out of it. You do not have to write a story for the project, the idea is to make a design on it. In real magazines, you must typically know what the story is to make the design, but because your magazine is themed, this should be quite easy to make a layout with no story. You may find one and use it, only if properly attributing it, or you may use filler text. This is to be done in InDesign, although you may see that you can use all three programs for one project.

Covers should be remembered. We can see that even history can be told with magazine covers.

This is an interesting video concerning convergence and magazines.

Good luck! Remember, there are no more rationale write ups due with projects.

Helvetica

Typefaces.
Let's learn about the important role they play. We've done some assignments concerning this, but in class we're going to watch a documentary named Helvetica. You may watch it on your own and not come to class, but I will be showing it in class. I will post questions on Dot.Lrn and I expect them to be answered the following class. I believe this video will enlighten you, please enjoy.

I bet you enjoy that I put videos on every post. :)

Ask and Create

Many students do not seem to understand my instructions upon assignments. If you have any questions whatsoever, please come and clarify or comment upon this post.

Now, we've moved on to InDesign and the calendar assignment. Three months and the cover all to be designed by you. Get creative with this one, I would love to see another idea like the one for Alice in Wonderland that I discussed in class. Striking pictures, interesting facts, cute themes, all working in the end to make a masterpiece. Remember, if you have any questions, please consult me or your classmates.

Just don't make a calendar like these. Enjoy.

Logo

We are working in Illustrator right now and I've been so pleased with the self portraits and creative type assignments that I've received from all of you. I've reviewed the instructions for the logo design assignment in class, but I'm just posting it here in our digital classroom.

Remember to:
-Write down ideas.
For who/what you're designing this logo for.
After deciding, what words or images come to your mind when you think about who/what you're designing this logo for.
-Draw rough sketches, you'll be amazed from what can evolve from these.
-Think of color schemes, contrasting, etc.

Basic Color Theory

I thought some of these may inspire you.

Good luck everyone. I'm ready to see what your minds will formulate for this project.

Welcome to JMC411 Design & Layout!

Hello Class,

I would like to welcome you to the networking site of our class. On occasion, we have questions after I'm out of my office and this tool is to help answer those questions. I hope all of you will check this often to help your fellow classmates with questions. There will be posts of assignments and tips for them. I will do my best to check this site often to ensure that your questions have been answered. Social networking has changed the world that we once knew and I feel that all of you in my class are somehow interested in the media and using social media is just another aspect of my class because of the important role it now plays in the media.

Thank You,
Professor Kayla Paine
